Yeah, when I had the 550 my commute wasn't too MPG-friendly... A lot of city and stop-start driving on crowded Silicon Valley freeways...

Trip from Billings, Mt. to Denver, Co. last week with cruise control set at 77 mph probably 99% of the trip, I got 29.4 mpg on the trip computer. Stopped only once to fill-up and pee in Casper, Wy..
This is on a 2008 535XI.

My OBC shows that I am getting 23 MPG. Mostly mixed highway miles. I get stuck in rush hour(s) traffic often. I am showing average speed of just over 43MPH.

that' really good, almost same as my '07 535d and you have 4wd, I'm impressed. Good on the wallet, good on the environment; and with less fuel stops, faster than you'ld otherwise think. I'm having more fun in my 535d now but in real world driving, my 520d was probably faster! Still, getting 29 mpg and having the power is sweet.

On a recent 300 mile motorway round trip with family in car (driving gently) my 520d (6M) OBC indicated an average of 67 MPG. Brim to brim measurement after trip showed true consumption to be 54mpg - OBC is 14% optmistic. Even so @ 54MPG I'm delighted with this econony. I have a tuning box so maybe that is helping- Day to day 80% city 20% motorway OBC shows 45mpg corrected to actual 38mpg. Okay its not a 550 but I'm really happy with the overall package. Tuning box manufacturers claim it improves outright performance when required and fuel economy when car driven gently- could they be right??

great mileage, beats my own experience with a 520d with 6-speed manual (from july 2008 - e60 with 177 hp engine and 16" factory wheels); never bested 18.8 km/l on any length of highway so your chip is making a very real difference. With the new F10 going 20 km/l and being even more powerful, it sounds very credible. My own experience with a chipped Subaru Legacy GT 2.0 turbo with stock 245hp which measured 272hp on a dyno after chipping, was a good 1 km/l better mileage. A chipped Ford Galaxy with normal aspiration got more power but worse mileage so the turbo makes a difference. I'm definetely getting better mileage from the 535d now with chipping; saw 17.5 km/l going 110 whereas prechip was 14.4 km/l going 130 km/h. Your 520d is among the most economical cars in the world yet feels very powerful and my car had a real world topspeed of 235 km/h measured on the gps so I'm guessing yours chipped is even faster; unbelievable what you can squeeze out of a 4 cylinder diesel - now if only it would sound like a 6-cylinder...

I just note you are from Ireland and as such, we are not dealing with US miles/gallons. The OBC indicated 67 MPG translates to 23.72 km/l and your own measurement of 54mpg translates to 19.12 which isn't far from what I've seen at 18.8 km/l in my stock 520d for pure highway driving (conservative driving!) so now it sounds even more credible to me. Your estimation for mixed driving sounds too low however; it translates to 13.45 km/l and I've only been able to get my 520d that far down when doing 235 km/h on the German autobahn; no matter how rotten I've driven I've never been able to get it below 14.5 km/l and more typically 16.2 km/l so if that is what you really are seeing, then you are perhaps experiencing what I've also seen with chipped turbo/supercharger cars; better mileage when driving conservatively and worse mileage when driving with more spirit (which makes sense, as you are getting more power)..
