mostly highway driving I've averaged 12.4 l./100km over the 5 months and 5'000 km I've had my car. 2004 545 with 154'000 km on the clock. (that's 19 mpg, 96k miles)
as a comparison I averaged 6.4 l./100km over 4 years and 80'000 km with my E46 330d (37 mpg).
hoping that a new thermostat to correct too low engine temp will lower consumption somewhat...

in my 520d I got 18.8 km/l on reasonably restrained highway driving, i.e. around 110 km/h. Real world, mixed was around 15.2 km/l. Every time I filled her up, it usually said I could do 1220-1250 km on a tankful of diesel and with the restrained driving, it's even told me it would do around 1400 km on a tankful of diesel; I think I've actually seen around 1,000 km on average, given there has been a fair bit of city driving every day.
The new 535d is more thirsty; will show around 700-800 km on a full tank but with restrained driving around 110-130 km/h on highway, it will tell me it can do 1020 km on a tankful and at 110 km/h I've just seen 17.2 km/l on the meter after a 50 km trip. Havent had it long enough to really tell and it depends a lot on how heavy the right foot is. I'm mostly seeing an average of 10-12 km/l on the meter in mixed driving now which I guess will translate into a range of 700-800 km on a tankful on average, over the longer term. It hurts a bit when I know how good the 520d really is and that you can drive a car that big and heavy and do 18.8 km/l on the highway but I sure am enjoying the sound and adrenaline rush when the twinturbo 3-liter spools it up to a hundred again and again and I know I'll enjoy breaking the 250 zone on the autobahn in Germany.

This is a thread that has been dormant for over a year. But I like the topic.
My lifetime MPG over 20k miles in my 550 is 16.6.

Big diff. The 520d got 36 mpg and the 535d 26 mpg (US). 550 has a sweet sound but is a tad too thirsty for my liking though guess it still beats the Porsche!
