I have some NAV DVD questions to suppliment this topic. I live in a major metropolitian city (Denver ) I have a 2004 NAV CD would I see any benifits to buying a new NAV DVD?

would the graphics look better?

Does it display more info?

Finally, when I look up the name of a business, is that info stored on the CD, or does it get beamed down from the Satellites?

Usually, the updates to the discs add additional areas to the database. In other words, you might find additional road details on areas further away from major metropolitan areas. In addtion to the added detail on roads that may not have been on the older discs, Navteq is constantly updating data on the urban areas as well. For example, in Denver, they may have modified some roads due to some new development or change in the urban infrastructure. With each disc version, you'll get updates to this type of stuff.

It's important to note that the disc is just the raw data on the roads, businesses, etc. -- it's up to the car and the interface designers (BMW and/or whomever they contracted with to create the interface) to do the graphics, etc. In other words, the disc contains a ton of information but it's up to the car manufacturer to tap into that data and display it, etc. What that means is that new data discs don't usually affect the graphics or interface, they just add more accurate and up-to-date information to the existing displays. (Which also answers your question that the business names, phone numbers, etc. come from the disc, not the satellites -- the satellites only provide a stream of data that pinpoints the car's location on the earth.)

Thanks, k, I looked at both discs and they have identical labels. I guess I did update the NavTec disc in the E90 and forgot.

Another thought ... the NavTec update seems redundant if one has the BMW Assist Convenience Plan.

Thanks,
Randy...

I currently have 2007-2 for Europe and its clearly labeled on the DVD and case

On the back of the DVD case is the BMW part number and what appears to be two NAVTEQ p/n's.

Hope this helps.
