I lived in Bethesda years ago. Back then I had a Passport and was aware of it being illegal in VA (so would remove it before going there), but wasn't aware of DC. Got pulled over on the corner of M & Wisconsin, ticketed and radar detector impounded. Paid ticket and got it back. When the cop explained that I'd get it back after I paid the ticket, I said, let me make sure I understand this--it's illegal, but if you pay the fine you get it back? Wonder if they do that with drug busts???!!!!

2 things....

First of all... How the F^&K can you get pulled over at M & Wisconsin? You'd never get a parking spot. Did they just tell you to double park? (for those here not familiar with DC, that intersection is quite possibly THE busiest intersection in the entire USA)

Second... they had to give back the detector, because you are still allowed to use it in other states, including your home in MD. In fact, I question the legality of taking it from you until you paid the ticket.
I was at a red light heading north on Wisconsin. Light turns green, I'm half way through intersection, and I hear a siren and see lights from a cop car behind me. I said to my then-wife, I can't be speeding--we've only gone like 50 feet. I pulled over in front of a driveway, since like you said, parking anywhere in Georgetown is a joke. We'd just come from seeing the cherry blossoms--I guess that's what I get for taking the afternoon off and being a romantic...

Regarding the legality, the back of the ticket actually had instructions on where to go to pick up impounded property (it was in the really scarey part of DC ), and the cop there said they get radar detectors all the time. It took them 20 minutes to find mine--it was like a Barney Miller episode (now I'm dating myself...).

So what did they actually ticket you for Stream?

Anyway, Valentine 1 combined with a Blinder Extreme M-40 laser jammer would be the best protection you can get...if you live anywhere besides California, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Utah where laser jammers are illegal.

Not sure, but I think they may be illegal in Arizona too.

I have had a radar detector every day since the 1980's. Read the most recent magazine tests. The V1 is not the best in every category and sometimes not the best in the majority of categories. Some do better straight on, some around turns or over hills, some from behind. Read and judge for yourself based upon where you usually drive. I always used to get the best performing one but over the years I have changed that. Depending on where you live/work you might pick something near the top of the list but not the Passport or V1 because your car will get broken into unless you want to unplug it everytime you leave your car. From a ticket standpoint, I have not gotten more tickets with slightly less performing detectors.

I've been a detector user since the original Escort back in the 70's and I've been using the V1 since they began shipping.

As pennetta said, "best performing" is kind of a relative term. These days, just about all the mainstream detectors will perform pretty well but for me, the choice is still clearly V1 because of the information that it provides the driver.

Knowing where the threat is and how many there are is critical and once you have that information, you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

If indeed these devices are not illeagal in most states, why go to the trouble of hiding them? Is it to prevent break-in theft, patrolman anger if you DO happen to be getting a citation, etc ???

Parking ain't that bad there...

I grew up in Manhattan and went to Georgetown University undergrad. Parking is so easy in Gtown/DC compared to NYC. I don't understand why everyone always say parking in DC is tough...I guess its all relative.
