Question What's the best plan of attack for my ZF6HP19?

A few months ago I got my transmission fluid replaced on my 07 530xi. I absolutely love my car and love blowing the doors off all of my friend's Japanese tin cans but the 6HP19 has been an ongoing battle for me. It's very temperamental and 95% of my shifts are smooth and swift but it's the 5% that really piss me off. The 2-1 bump thing is really what I want gone ASAP. After I've driven on the highway for a while the shifts are a bit hesitant and clunky. Rarely when I speed back up after following a slower person and give it about 50% throttle, it will rev to about 3500-4000 RPM and attempt to up-shift but then won't shift and the revs will raise slightly and it will slam into gear. Then it won't do it again the rest of the trip. After some forum searching I think my problem has something to do with valve body and/or solenoids. But that's about where my knowledge ends, I'm stuck trying to figure out how to get the problem diagnosed. I think a valve body pressure test might help but I'm not sure. I keep resetting my adaptations every 1500-2000 miles and it kinda go's away but then comes back.

All of this seems pretty straight forward but I'm stuck trying to figure out where to get the problem diagnosed + fixed. I live in the middle of VT and BMW specialists aren't readily available. On bimmershops.com there a few listed near me but none of them seem to be BMW "specialists." They're kinda "we'll do anything from a Corolla to a Maserati" places . I have a Dealer about 45 mins from my house but I have a feeling I'll go in there, they'll look at a TSB and tell me I need a valve body without even touching the car. There's also an AAMCO down the road from the dealer but from what I've read they're kinda shit.

ANYWAY, if anyone has any tips about where + how I should go about getting this fixed would be greatly appreciated. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Flex disk connecting trans to driveshaft. Called a Guido coupler. Around $100. Not hard to do just be sure install in the right direction.

I doubt that would prevent it form shifting at the correct time. Look in the DIY section (KyleB thread). This is a common problem that is fairly easy to fix if you can turn wrenches. A lot of has had this issue and have fixed it cheap compared to dealer or mech shop prices.

Did the solenoids and rubber seals in my trans. I didn't have the 2-1 shift issue (should be solved with a software update), but i did have some jerky gears shifts. Soft as butter now for 6 months. Also dont go to the dealer with trans issues. They don't even sell solenoids, all they do is switch valve-bodies. When i went to get my rubber seals from them, it was the first time they ever ordered them..

What software update are you referring to? Can these be done as a DIY? or at an Indy?

Or does this have to be done at BMW

LoL.....Sorry I didnt realize I misspelled. My keyboard auto-corrected. However you corrected me but you too misspelled the part. No matter, the "Guibo" probably isn't the problem.

I've heard about the software update, I have the connector and programs (INPA, WinKP etc.) but still haven't been able to grasp how to update it. Did you get yours updated at the dealer? I don't think mine has been done as it hasn't seen a dealer in probably 4-5 years. Could I get a "regular" mechanic to do the solenoids?

Having someone who is knowledgeable with the ZF transmission is probably necessary. They put this transmission on a variety of BMWs, and some Hyundais as well.

There are several videos/articles on the internet that document how to change the solenoids.

Genuine ZF Parts -- sells kits to service our transmissions including solenoid kits.

I'd confirm with your mechanic that he is versed in the procedure before you let him touch your car.

ALSO -- I too, would like to know more about the software update -- as I think mine is due for that as well.
