I have experienced stalling last week, and on both occasions I was moving out from a gas station. I have also noticed that my car would go backwards when moving off from slopes. I think they are due to the low engine speed at idling.

Edit: Sorry, Lomag is right, the RPM should be in the hundreds instead

I think your numbers are off by a factor of ten. You mean 500, 600, 700, etc.. rpm right?

Mine idles at 750 rpm usually

Mine used to be 550 rpm but dealer upped it to 750 rpm to prevent stalling and sliding back on slope.

That's perculiar - all reports of a stalled engine was when we were pulling out of a petrol station (mine included!)

Mine idles at 550ish

the rev counter shows mine is idling around the 600 mark but I don't know how accurate rev counters are at idle. for me its just an approx reading.

I think it is due to car being too heavy after petrol top up coupled with low idling rpm. So, the engine had problem adjusting to the sudden change of weight.

500 or 750 RPM. (545 Steptronic)

I'm not sure what variables are causing the two different idle speeds. The AC compressor has been discussed, but I am not certain this is the only variable.

I have occasional stumbles or hesitations starting from a stop, which I believe only occur when the engine is idling at 500 RPM.

Could it be a problem with 520i? Mine is at around 650rpm.
