I have the same tires on my 550. I think they are much better than the ContiSport Contact 2 that came with the car. The DWS fit the bill nice since I don't track or go on spirited runs in twisties, dry weather traction and stiff sidewallls don't matter as much as wet weather handling, comfort, and quietness.
My only disappointment is that my first set of rear tires lasted me only around 12k miles (just over a year). Discount Tire replaced them as "deffective" under warranty and so far the rear seems to have lasted longer...though I put less miles on my car now due to change in work schedule. I'll get their opinion on wear the next time I go in for a rotation.
Other tires I would consider:
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3
Continental ExtremeContact DW

I've had Potenza RE960 and love those as they grip very well. I've also had Michelin Pilot sport A/S they ride very well and gave a much softer ride, however the tread starting chunking where dime size pieces were coming off. Michelin warranty them and gave me a full refund so now I'm on a set of Conti DWS.
For the longer tread wear - Conti dws
For a smooth ride - Michelin
For a performance side, twisties, cornering, hard turns - Bridgestone Potenza, I think they no longer have the 960, they now are 970. For a super stickie set, try out the S-02 or S-04

I was running the potenza and I loved them ran them at 140mph and they held up good. I am now running Conti extreme a bit smoother but I felt more confident and secure with the potenzas. The Conti are too soft and I am a spirited driver, I regularly drive over 100mph. I also hit a small pot hole and popped one of the Conti (wasn't fixable). I'm not saying they are bad tires, I've only been on them for maybe 2000 miles, I think the way I drive I prefer the potenzas.

+1, just swapped from Potenza RFTs to A/3s. I knew I was going to see a ride difference from RFT to non RFTs but these exceeded my expectations. Was a little worried the All/Season tire would not look as sporty but I was wrong. Also come with 45K tread life.

Do 285 x 30 x 19s work ok on the 2009 550i Sport Pack. Bimmer? Thinking of putting Michelin Pilots on rear since my Conti Contact 2 are worn to scrub bar. Contact 2 245s up front have plenty of thread. Also can 15mm spaces be used with 285s? If these are ok to mount on 172 rim? Thanks.
