Default What should a 545i be running at for coolant temp?

I hooked my car up tonight to check a few things and noticed idling in 40 degree weather I'm at 221 degrees coolant temp which seems high to me. If I rev the engine up to say 2000 or so for a few seconds it drops to 217. I hate not having a temp gauge!!

In summer my highest temp at idle was just under 220.

You sound about correct. BMW engines run at higher temps. No worries. You do have a temp gauge btw. It;s on the outside of the RPM ring
