What is LCI and pre-LCI?

My Ride: 2005 silver gray metallic 530i with sport package, premium package, cold weather package, navigation, and L-7 audio.
I am a pretty new BMW owner, and I've seen references made to LCI and pre-LCI. What is LCI? I'm not sure if I'm correct, but does it refer to the newer year model 5 series? I've seen it in regards to rear taillights too... I'm a little confused, help educate a new bimmer owner. Thanks!
