Seriously, HPFP is a bit of a pain, if you're considering a car with the N54 engine, make sure you buy it with warranty. Even though the pump itself has an extension of it's warranty, it has been alleged before that the HPFP failure can lead to other failures, some could be really costly, as I'm sure you can guess.

That's a great summary. The only thing I'd add is that the N54 is also one of the engines available on the X6 in the States, and there too it is NOT immune to the HPFP problem.

Also, if you are having the HPFP replaced, try to make sure you're getting the "new" re-designed unit - not a factory-refurbished original design one. Although I'm 99% sure that 100% of all SA's will say you're getting the "new" one, no matter which one you'll be getting in actuality. Still, the re-designed version seems to have a very low rate of failure.

Yet another thing to remember about the N54 engine - and this has nothing to do with the HPFP, as far as I know - you have to make sure you don't overheat it. This is mostly only applicable if you track the car though.

PS almost forgot: with all the crap surrounding the N54's HPFP failures and so on, I still would get a car with this engine in a heartbeat. The only difference is, I wouldn't keep this car past the warranty/CPO, as I am doing with my 530Xi. N52 engine is not perfect either, but at least it doesn't have the expensive turbos and intercoolers for me to worry about.
