My Ride: Silver 2004 e60 executive 530i. Zero mods.
I am wondering what fuel other e60 drivers use in HK...I use the cheaper gas, not the premium one with higher octane level. Am I doing the right thing?

Your car will run fine on the lower grades but not at peak performance using the higher grades. I don't know how they rate fuel in Honk Kong, but in the US, we tend to have Premium grades in the 91-93 Octane rating. This is probably the best fuel for the engine. However, the lower grade (89), will work fine, too, but the engine won't be running at peak performance.
So, this is how I understand it. I always put premium fuel grade into my BMWs with an octane rating of 91-93.

Welcome to the forum Oliver Hui. I use Shell V-Power. I believe its the most expensive 98 Octane over here. However, I understand that this is a waste of money as 95 would suffice because the engine management unit will optimise engine performance so long as the fuel you use is within the recommended range.

The "cheap" gas in Hong Kong is 91-92 octane, the expensive one is 94 I think. There are only 2 grades. To fuel up a E60 here in Hong Kong from E to F, it costs around US$100, just FYI ... heh heh.

91 octane here. I haven't seen any higher octane available around here.

BMW recommends using premium inleaded fuel. Using a lower grade will work ok but if you had the $$ to buy the E60 I wouldn't try to cot costs on fuel. I've read on various sites that the higher octane promotes better gas mileage as well. Hope this helps and welcome aboard.

The octane issue seems to come up frequently, and there always seems to be allot of confusion as to what it is, what it does, and is "higher octane better."
I found explanations at the following websites helpful:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question90.htm (this explanation of the ratings does not seem 100% accurate, but an otherwise good explanation and a cool site generally)
