What DVD player can i get for the E60?

BMW has a "rear entertainment" option planned for 2004. It will include a LCD in the rear center console and a DVD changer in the trunk. It was supposed to be available starting March production, but has been delayed for unknown reasons. If you visit a BMW dealer and go to the parts dept and ask them to show you what they can see on their parts computer, you'll see diagrams and part numbers for both the rear console and the DVD changer.
BMW NA will not make any statements as to the availability of a retrofit kit for cars made before they offer the rear-ent pack (OREP). Given that such an option would require extensive cabling between the rear console and the trunk, I would assume that a retrofit is unlikely.

Yes indeed BMW has an entertainment package planned...fairly good info on the link 08.28.2003 US E60 Dealer Product Information on e60.doit.wisc.edu homepage...it is an 80+MB Adobe PDF file of the guide I've only manage to peruse in the dealer...now you can have your own copy and check out either page 51 or 52 of the guide for the specific information on the DVD setup...sounds slick, but I'm not crazy about so much money for such a small screen...recently purchased a Panasonic 9" Portable DVD...even has Progressive Scan...really, really nice picture and nice to be able to take with you from the car into a hotel, airline, etc. Eventually plan on putting 2 7" displays built into headrests in my MB ML430 and then have them wire it so that this player simply plugs into that system as the DVD player, allowing a show for 3. Would be nice to have a similar system in 545i, but don't see it happening with BMWs comfort seat headrests...one for my wishlist I guess.

Goto the link below to see pics of the stuff mentioned above - doesn't look very good though... the setup on the new E class looks much classier!

After seeing the Eurologistics site (and learning about the delays on the rear entertainment option), I investigated the cost of replacement headrest to get a sense of what my be involved in building a headrest-mounted display. BMWNA lists the leather comfort seat head rests for $220 each. Assume that the LCD monitors will cost about $500-$700 depending on the size, your looking at about $1000 per headset *plus* the video distributing system and the DVD changer. I'll try to get instructions on how to moun/unmount the headrests and will post the info as I get it.

Did you see those prices / parts online somewhere? It looks like comfort seat headrests should be compatible with the sports seats, since it's just the non-power "wings". (Right?) That might be a cheaper way to go to get some neck support?

Eurologistics charges 1065euro (5") and 1400euro (7") for inserting monitors in the 5 series headrests. You need to supply the headrest to get this price.
In the US you can buy a range of monitors (uninstalled) for $500-$700)
