What is the best pipe diameter for turbo E60 exhaust?

I'm getting my exhaust done tomorrow and the technician recommended a 2 and 1/2 inch diameter for the tubing. I remember someone telling me that a 3 inch diameter gives it a better flow for cars with turbo's. Can anyone elaborate?
btw I'm not going quad anymore! Since it's just a lease I'm gonna save a couple bucks and wait a few years to have my true dual quad (M5)

Unlike naturally aspirated cars, turbocharged cars can benefit from pretty much as big an increase in exhaust flow as you can manage. That horrible "coffee can" trend that plagues our streets today actually started in the high-end Japanese tuner market in the early 90s. Companies like HKS and Greddy started making those oversized exhausts because they served a real purpose on the cars of the day - twin-turbo Zs, Supra turbos, Skylines, etc...
