Ok so I just picked up my 545i a few days ago, 2005 model. So anyways I was cleaning it last night and you know under the arm rest between the driver/passenger seats you have a couple compartments of little storage areas. My question is this: if you go to the very bottom of the largest open space , there is a little black "slider piece" with a round circle inside the storage area. Does anyone know what the heck this thing is? I tried to see it with a flashlight but have no idea what this is. You can see it from the backseat facing towards the front of the car. Any insight would be helpful.

It's opens up a vent to the the HVAC system. You can chill a drink in there if you open it when the air con is running. I guess it probably works for heat in the winter also.

Yes that picture is exactly it. Sounds kinda weird to heat/cool this little compartment. Just very strange to have that added in there.

Am I right if I have understood that the heating/cooling feature isn't available if the car has an iPod feature 6FL, it goes there instead?

with the 6fl option, there still is what seems to be a vent in that box...not sure how functional it really is tho...
