I was doing some work late last night and noticed these inside the center console of my 05 545. Anyone know what they are?

It is a vent from the heater/cooler system so you can direct cool air/warm into the box. Don't know why.

That is correct.

It's so you can put a soda can or something in there, and have air from the AC keep it cool.

The flip up/down thing is so you can open/close the air passageway. Just like you can close the air vents for the driver/passenger on the console.

the hole with the cover is the inlet, the other one the outlet.
Its actually quite a nice feature, in case you want a cold drink or kit kat. Just remember that the remember in the box is controlled with the rear passenger temp knob.

I've learnt after several melted mars bars.

They originally had a special BMW (aka gloriously expensive) telephone that had a cradle in there. This was a few months before BlueTooth. I had the impression that keeping the phone cool was the reason for the ventilation. But maybe it really was for Mars Bars.

What about the trunk ? Does our E60 trunk be cooled by AC in summer and warmed by heat in winter ? This would be a great feature especially in summer time to keep the shopping food cool until home.

I thought it was for a USB or phone jack port? There's a -+ on it...
