have a similar feeling with my '06 550. It seems like the gear doesn't engage right away sometimes. Don't know if this is normal or not but planning to bring it to an indy shop for a second opinion. Planning to get the transmission oil change soon anyway.
If anyone has any similar problem as mine, please chime in. Hoping it's not something serious since factory warranty has expired and no extended warranty.

What you are feeling is "normal" but if it's very noticeable you may want to have your ATF level checked (it may be low for one reason or another). The reason for this feeling is that these ZF automatics actually disengage the torque converter when stopped, to keep the load off the drivetrain and save gas.
From Wikipedia:
From Wikipedia:
The ZF 6HP26 uses a Lepelletier epicyclic/planetary gearset, which can provide more gear ratios with significantly fewer components. This means the ZF 6HP26 is actually lighter than its 5-speed predecessors. It also has the capability to achieve torque converter lock-up on all six forward gears, and disengage it completely when at a standstill, dramatically closing the fuel efficiency gap between automatic and manual transmissions.

Maybe resetting the tranny might help....
Just turn the key two clicks (do not start the car)
Press the gas pedal all the way down, past the kick down resistance
hold for a good 25 sec
release gas pedal
done
How know it may help..if not it will at least drive smoother afterwards..
