This is normal behaviour.

About every 1000 miles, the particulate filter goes through a "burn" phase to remove residue - this involves closing off some valves or something like that.

It happens on my car too - sounds like you've got a V8 under your right foot
er.... what's the particulate filter?

Its a filter in the exhaust system that removes particulate matter (soot) from the diesel exhaust gas.

How would you know if it is in D6 or D5? I always wondered why they don't list gears in D or DS...

I can tell from the tach. reading at a given speed (and the engine note) based on experience (only 8 weeks experience mind!). For my 530d @75mph in D5 engine revs are about about 2300rpm, in D6 at the same speed engine revs are <2000rpm (figures from memory so please 530d guys don't jump on me if I'm off a little).

Been there, reported that to my dealer - and eventually also found out about this "feature".
Like Browellm dissappointed but sadly no longer surprised that BMW don't bother to advise owners about this. Do they expect us not to notice the sudden lock out of 6th - surely any serious driver can tell the rev difference by ear ?

By ear? In an E60? You must have very good ears.
