It's a solar sensor. It's only there when you have advanced climate control.

What it does: It's basically a light sensor with some filters that make it only sensitive to sunlight. It determines the radiation of sun energy heating up your car, and this info is used by the A/C system to compensate for that heating or ideally react before the heating occurs.

It reduces temperature fluctuations, as the traditional temperature sensor (fan+NTC in A/C control panel) is a relatively slow method. It will only detect sun heating after 5...20 seconds, by that time a human being is feeling too hot already.

So it's a sensor that improves your A/C regulation. I'm pretty sure the LCI still has one but I'm not sure where it's located.
