Driving on the way to holidays, I had a low ccolant warning for the first time in 37 000 km. I went straight to BMW in Germany to refil.

Checking again visually one week after: the level was again below the limit. I went to BMW in Graubunden in Switzerland (Ardez). They checked the car under garantee and came to the conclusion that the mechanical driven water pump was leaking. You could notice some marks of coolant under the engine bay.
They replaced the pump the day after and gave me immediately a loaner. Very competent service customer oriented.

But it is not acceptable that a basic component as a water pump failes after only less than 40000 km on such a car.

Entirely agree. I now have something to worry about, as my 535d has 32,000 km.

Water pumps are a known weak point in many BMW engines. Which is even less excusable - why the heck don't they fix it?

I wonder what the frequency of the occurrence of this is?

Could the roaring silence be an indicator?

Let us hope. 40,000 kms is very little even for a BMW water pump, so perhaps FJPM has been unlucky

No: the no noise at all. You can detect it easily by looking the to the various cooling pipe connected to the radiator on the right side of the car (looking to the engine). You will notice some white stains: it is coolant spraied by the fan.

The water is leeking from the pump through the central cealing around the shaft (I have seen my pump).

You cannot see it when watching the engine
