Since the warranty in my car runs out in May, and trade in value is next to nothing (many options / high mileage), I was thinking about getting a year's (or two) extra warranty.
The costs for this are about GBP 1050 for year 4.
I had my SA make a print-out of the repair history. Got it in the post today.
Guess what? THIRTY pages of issues, most of which I wasn't even aware of. I should be able to make a case somewhere that this is not the most reliable car in the world and that a gesture of good will would be in place here.

Does anybody have any good ideas of who to write to, and what a good approach would be?

Thanks.

Your dealer would be the first place to start? I don't think you'll have much luck...

If not, try here: WarrantyDirect

Interesting. The quote I got was 416 GBP, not bad.
Although I doubt it will cover faults to ACC, DD or my door seals, for example.
These are the reasons I don't want to own this car out of warranty really..

May be worth checking if any of the numerous repairs are guaranteed beyond the warranty expiry. For example, if the Idrive was fixed last month, then that should carry a 12 month guarantee from then?
Good customer service should dictate that it does..

An example of good customer service is Apple. Ipod failed at 11 months, they sent me a new one, the new one had 9 months guarantee. Thats what I call good service!.

This is correct.
I had a new engine installed. Although this carries automatic 1 year warranty as a repair - my dealer gave me an extended 2 year warranty on the whole car. At least they appreciate my loyalty.

I would speak to them or read the small print on such a 'high spec' car... I wouldn't imagine the 'BMW' cover was any better because at the end of the day they're all underwritten by an insurance company and there's T+C's in there somewhere...

You might find that Warranty Direct has more comprehensive coverage than BMW.

You will miss out on Emergency Assistance, but there are other options for that.
