What are you guys planning to do when the 4-year / 50K miles warranty runs out?
I guess there are several options:
1. Extend warranty for 2 years / 100K (my understanding from the dealer is it costs around $1.5K, is that a standard price or is it negotiable?)
2. Hope than bugs will have been fixed by then, and pay for any additional work going forward
3. Sell the car / return it on lease
I did a search on warranty / extended warranty, seems like this hasnt' been covered on the forum before?

Thanks Anonymous!
This jives exactly with what my dealer told me. I'm planning to change the car between 3 to 6 years so I may pay the $1.5K (which is what i was also quoted) to extend to 6 years/100K.
Is that extension something i can decide later on, or do I have to make the choice at the dealer? If they put me on the spot I have a lot less ability to shop around or to negotiate a better price

I planed to keep my E60 for about 7years so I bought 7/100K extend warranty for $1795. Just in case.

You cannot add it anytime -- please check with your dealer. To add the BMW extended maintenance, I seem to recall that you must sign the necessary contracts either (i) before the 1st anniversary of your delivery (or the price may go up); or (ii) before the expiration of the 4/50K warranty/maintenance period.

BMW545, did you negotiate down the price on your warranty, or was it more or less a fixed price? Dealers seem to be quoting the same price for the 6 year warranty (although I've only called two)...

Most dealers offer their own extended warranty through them. In other words, not a BMWNA warranty. It's a dealer warranty. I'm NOT referring to the maintenance thing. Just the warranty.
I've been told that you can extend your warranty as long as your current car is still under the factory warranty. That was the case with my Porsche as well.
Anyway, I plan on keeping this car for a while. So I will be extending mine. I think you'd have to be almost crazy not to. Imagine what some sort of iDrive repair will cost down the line after your factory warranty expires. BMWs are not cheap to fix.

On my 97 528 I bought an extended warranty from GE Auto Warranty Services, it covered alot and it cost $1100. I actually used it for repairs that would have cost me about $1200. The deductable was $50 and repairs were approved by the dealer calling by phone and taking their credit card number. Pretty seemless and even though mine was a break even I would do it again.
