Very high pitch squeal on downshift
Hi guys,
I have a 2006 E60 530i, and I've been noticing that when it downshifts (mainly into 1st), it likes to make a very high pitch squeal. The squeal is almost like what squeaky brakes sounds like, but I know it's not the brakes as I recently got the front and rear pads replaced, and when it happens I'm not on the brake pedal.
All I know is the sound doesn't sound healthy, and is obvious when the windows are down. Do you guys know what it may be? I'm worried the transmission may give out...

Hmmm like a (fan) belt squeal? Do you hear "chirps" (but not tire chirps from all that power) when you fast shift? Could be the serpentine belt needs replacing. Generally, as they get older, they are not as noisy as the v-belts of old. But the pulleys and tensioners sometimes get glazed over time and can cause some slipping that creates a noise when engine rpm's change quickly - as in a downshift at speed. BTW, DO NOT use any of those belt dressings on serpentine belts - that will do more harm than good! When they are worn they should be replaced.
