Just a check up or physical inspection, I usually just re-set it.

Turn key 1 notch over not starting the engine
Hold down trip meter reset button for about 5 seconds until triangle caution symbol shows up and goes away
Press and release trip meter reset button until the icon symbol is displayed
When the symbol is displayed, press and hold trip meter reset button until "OK" is displayed, release trip meter then your good to go.
Turn off engine

This is the same thing as i posted above.
I reset my 520d as described above, however if you have push start button you need to insert key and push start button but dont press clutch.
Then proceed to reset using trip meter button - worked for me.
