Is the V8 5-series just that good?

I don't know, I think the e92 M3 is off da hinges

Hopefully my next car since my son has his own car now and I don't need all the room I have in my 5.
I could also see myself getting an E46 M3 for a weekend/occasional track car and driving the 5 into the ground. The 5 is almost the perfect road car where I live. Fast, comfortable, handling that is amazing for its size and it deals well with the crappy roads here in the snow belt.

I think 996s are getting a much worse rap than they deserve, they're definitely great value for money right now. Now, would I get one myself? No, I don't think I could stand looking at that ultra-cheapo first-gen Boxster interior for long. 993s are the last of a breed but overpriced because of it, and 997s are vastly improved but still pretty pricey.
Oh, and 996 turbo is a big step up from 996 carrera power-wise, but the maintenance cost on turbos can eat you alive especially if something breaks...

Eh it aint all that... no worries. Honda Civics often beat me off the line.
Right, they wouldn't beat you if you were in reverse

As you probably know, I have been shopping for a new car now that mine is 5 years old and I don't really need 4 doors. I have driven the 135 coupe, a 128 vert, an M3, a 335 coupe, and a 2003 911. I honestly can say that after driving those cars, which all were great (save the power of the 128), I got back in my car, revved the engine, dropped the clutch, and got the same old rush that just can't be beat.
When I walk out to the car in parking lots, I still stare at it.
Even though I have it for sale, I'm actually thinking I may just keep it. The only car I drove that I thought "I could trade my car for this" was the M3. I was underimpressed with the power of the 911 vs my 545.
am I nuts?

Not at all. The only thing I would trade my car in for is an M5... But then I would turn around and mod it to look like my 545.
+1 on the stop and stare comment...LOL.... i do the same, but I also take a pic of it with my Iphone.... which i never end up looking at.

I am curious though, what would you do to an M5 to make it look like a 545? replace bumpers and skirts with non sport? Replace 166's with 124's? debadge? Not sure what options there are for fender grille deletes? anyone?

well, you'd have to start with non-M fenders and go from there. The front fenders on the M are wider than ours (which is why the M font bumper doesn't fit our cars). Then you can go with OEM sides and rear bumper, shadowline trim (the M has gloss trim), then the interior needs to be gutted (you might find a couple of buyers here
), then the mirrors need to be swapped. Then you'll need a custom single exhaust (did I really just say that?)

Had mine in today for Passenger Airbag Sensor Recall, and got all excited by a 2007 M6 Coupe, 17K miles, CPO for $67,000 just turned in from lease. Went for a test drive to see how drivable the SMG was around town. Didn't push it, just basic city driving. The SMG was easy to get used to. Was expecting harsh, bone-jarring shifts after reading online, but was very smooth, if a bit slow between gears. The V-10 seemed to want to hover between 3-4K RPM--no wonder they get terrible MPG. My 4.4L doesn't mind loafing between 1500-2000 RPM in any gear. Have 23.5 MPG average on the computer in mostly city driving.
Previously test drove a Porsche 997 C4S and was very impressed. Also drove 996 Carrera and 996 Turbo, and not so.
Basically, I'm totally jazzed by my 545i. Especially, love the tight handling from the ARS and AS. Every drive always produces a smile.
