In my Hondas, pushing forward is upshift and in the e60 pushing forward is downshift and I had a shock of my life when I was speeding up and had intended to upshift when I pushed the selector forward and that almost red lined the rpm.

Don't worry, you'll get used to it. I came from a Honda automatic too.

I've found that if you let off the throttle as you upshift, you can indeed make the car "feel" like you are driving a manual. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as well with hard acceleration. Just don't mistakenly slam your foot on the brake thinking it is the clutch!
