Anyone tried the AmSoil Synthetic 5W-30 European formulation extended life oil? Don't believe it's recommended by BMW but keep hearing that it will improve gas mileage and extend engine life due to superior lubrication performance. At $11 per quart it better! If no one else has I may give it a try next time I change my oil to see if it in fact does improve gas mileage.

I'm using the Amsoil European Oil with 5K oil changes since I'm a nut on maintenance. However, I've only had the car for a year (2004), so it's early to pass judgement. I had an email exchange with Amsoil about the BMW ratings. They choose not to jump through the BMW hoops to get it approved. As with all the synthetic motor oils, it all depends on who's propaganda you want to believe. Either way, I'm not leaving anyone's oil in for 15k miles! DIY oil changes are cheap insurance!
BTW, if you go the Amsoil route, consider becoming a preferred customer, you pay an annual fee and get dealer cost on everything. I think the break even point is about $100 of product a year. I've been using Amsoil exclusively for 10 years now on all my vehicles. Order online and it's at the door in a few days. But you do have to plan ahead a bit.
