It is for connecting auxiliary audio devices (ie iPod). For more information see this topic

This is actually what I use mine for...I have a 8G USB memory stick, drag "My Music" onto the stick, plug it into the USB port in the console, and the folder structure complete with filenames shows up. It's great!

BTW, is the USB port part of the iPod option? I know to play the iPod, you have to use the included cable (which the original poster menitoned) and it must be plugged into both the USB port AND the Auxiliary port. IMO, the USB stick works better than the iPod...USB port doesn't need the Auxiliary port connection.

Yes.

A small portable USB harddrive also works well.

Yes, but only if the power requirements of the drive are on the low side...

All USA cars with the iPod/USB option are entitled to a free iPod cable. If you're dealer charged you, I'd demand a refund...

They didn't charge me. I didn't even know about a cable. I ended up using one that came with a USB wireless network card that I bought. I bought the car back in November. Is it too late to demand they give me the cable?
