I'm in the process of ordering my LCI and the USB/iPOD bit is going to be ?320, although it appears that the functionality is already in place and is included in the basic price.

I picked up an LCI 530d Sport yesterday with the AUX/USB interface and like TC I'm using it with a 4Gb Sandisk Cruzer stick. Everything works fine even 320kbps MP3's which the manual says it cannot guarantee playback due to the data transfer rate. For reference the book reckons 256kbps files should be used for maximum compatibility.
I'm going to have a go with my iPod today even though the official cable is not released yet. I suspect looking at the pre-production notes/photos of the iPod cable is that it takes the line-out (non-amplified) stereo audio feed from the dock connector for the audio and the USB control signals.
My speculation is that if the unit does indeed initiate playback on the iPod then the audio would need to be fed at a constant level unlike the headphone output which varies depending on the volume level of the device. If this is the case I have an iPod Dock which breaks out the audio from the bottom connector, so I will try that too and report back.

Just tried my 40Gb Gen 4 iPod with the standard USB cable and whilst the iPod starts to charge, the USB input option on the iDrive is greyed out. Tried various different orders of connecting and powering up but either way my PC formatted iPod would not be recognised.

?205 for the USB interface isn't bad at all in the scheme of things. I think the ambiguity of what is actually required to connect an iPod is a bit naughty though on BMW's part as they still cannot confirm the price of the cable. Various posters have had quotes of between ?30 & ?60 and availability ranging from now to June. My dealer reckons ?60 from May.
In response to bob.a's question about the type of Sandisk Cruzer its the 4Gb Cruzer Micro
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(1925)...Black__New.aspx
The music files are MP3's encoded with bit rates ranging from 192kbps to 320kbps
Using this method the car cannot play DRM protected files.
