I heard on the news today that the US is mandating new & improved mpg starting with model year 2012 cars.

I heard the new minimum is going to be 35mpg, probably hwy.

So, my question is I was going to eye 2011 5-series, but now I'm thinking that I should wait 'til the 2012 model year comes out?

What's the board's opinion?

I would buy an E60 now and defer the models that meet the new standards for as long as possible. A mandatd significant change in technology like this puts a strain on designers and manufaacturers capabilities to put out a trouble free reliaable product. I would predict a couple of model years to work out the bugs.

the new rules begin in 2012 but dont take full effect to 2016. These are fleet averages, not each car will need to meet this efficiency. the smaller cars will keep the number in the average, but dont expect that a 550 in 2012 will be getting 35mpg
