I remember a while back last year Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear test drove a 550 diesel versus petrol. Although the D could not keep up on the track it did pretty well overall. Perhaps someone can find it.

There's no 550 diesel.

The clip was a 535d v. 545i IIRC. Clarkson lost, unsurprisingly.

Hey, Mr. Diesel, the stock 535d goe from 0 to 200 kmh in 24.5 seconds . A stock 545i in **18** .

On the 545i even an ape would have won against the 535d driven by Stig .

Hey , Mr. Anti-Diesel

0-200km/h was used extensively on the Top Gear track. Wasn't it?

The 545i is excellent for getting to the shops before the 535d. Load up with popcorn. Get some ballast.

Personally I prefer the availability of torque on a long leisurely journey - oh and I really appreciate the average 10 times a year I DON'T have spend yet another 10 minutes (or even 5) in a filling station (compared to a 545i)... unless you REALLY need that coffee or those cigarettes to deal with all that....uhhhhh...power.

Lies, damn lies and statistics... what's next to distort?

The 535d has - obviously - a better consumption (it is diesel, do you remember ?) .

But the 535i is faster, has a better sound, cheaper service costs and it is should be cheaper to buy than the 535d (here the E90 335i costs EUR 43k and the 335d 46k*) .

*
With EUR 3000 you can buy 2200 liters of petrol .

Edit : Finally, the petrol engine is absolutely more reliable than the diesel one .

Aybeesea, is it enough ?
I totally agree. My 530i LCI has the same bhp as the 535d, same average consumption, abt. 9,5l/100 km, better sound, same 0-100 km/h, it is cheaper and nor troubles whatsoever with turbo chargers etc.

I am based in the UK and ive had my car for almost 13 months and 32k miles. Its a 520d.

I put up a poll on here almost a year ago, asking what E60 people had in the UK. It came out that 80% of UK E60 buyers opt for the diesel. Thats gotta say something.

Why should a diesel be less reliable than a petrol? A diesel revs lower, so less bore wear, and the fuel is an oil, not a solvent, so again, less wear.

On economy, I do 100 miles a day, 50 miles each way to work - average speed of nearly 50 mph on mixed country and motorway/freeway style roads. I get a GENUINE 46mpg in the summer - but it drops to around 42 in the winter. (Genuine, cos i have recalibrated my fuel computer as informed on this site - if its not, it reads 10% optimistic). For USA readers, reduce those figures by approx 10% as the UK gallon is bigger.

The purchase price of the 520d is the lowest in the range for UK, there is no 'premium' for it. I suspect thou, that in the large engine obsessed USA you wont get this motor and will pay higher prices for the 330 or 335 models. To put it in context, the cost of a 520d in the UK is only about 5k dollars shy of a 550se! (figures for 12 months back)

Hi Steve,

I completely agree with you regarding the fuel economy if we talk about the 520d or, may be the 525d (not anymore since it is a 3l engine) but please nobody driving a 535d should talk about consumptions as these cars are more thirsty than an equivalent petrol, specially the new efficient dynamics engines.
