I have a 2004 530i with arrow type Sat Nav. I really miss the map type of Sat Nav I had in my previous car and am wondering if there is any way to upgrade to the map version. is it just a case of buying the map version of Sat Nav and inserting in my car?

No.
You can upgrade, but involves hardware as well as software. If you want to know how, then somebody will be able to tell you (or you could try the search function, but it's a little awkward!), but it's not just a software / disc change.
