not really, just one that performs better, is faster, and has less problems

BMW is constantly releasing newer versions of the software (referred to here as "progman" or "CIP" if you are in the searching mood...) to fix various bugs or to introduce some new features.
There are two basic types of systems in the E60 -- cars that have navigation (CCC) and cars that don't have navigation (M-ASK). I think the M-ASK cars perform a little better in terms of response time, etc. but I don't know for sure since my car is a CCC.
Overall, I think the responsiveness is a function of a slow processor (and probably some sloppy code mixed in) and I don't expect that to ever get fixed completely...
