Unknown switch and humming noise coming from engine bay

Im a newbie guys and im sorry if this has been covered but I've tried the search and it came up empty since I cant seem to describe what this is. I've been hearing a humming noise coming in and out from the engine bay while the car is off and its been driving me crazy so I decided to take a look and I found this switch/button. When the humming stopped I pressed the switch it seemed to have activated something and the humming noise came back. Now that I have located the culprit and determined that the hood, when opened or closed activates this, I still dont know what it is

My Ride: My ex-ride: EU '08 LCI 520dA. Space Grey, Sport Seats in Black Leather/Fabric Anthracite, Sport Steering Wheel, A/C with Extended Features, Hi-Fi Speakers, Cup Holders, Cruise with Braking function, Folding Rear Seats, Xenons, Park Distance Control.
The humming noice comes from the car taking care of itself (A/C and radiator).
Normal, nothing to worry about.
