I was impressed by looking underneath my E60. I can really enjoy a nice piece of engineering, and it was good to see that BMW did not forget the part that you normally don't see.

BMW made sure that the whole lower part of the car has been covered for the optimal cw value and for noise reduction. And for parts that needed airflow for cooling, like the transmission, they built special "wind tunnels" like you can see on the picture. Furthermore, almost all parts are made out of lightweight metals (mostly aluminum) and they even put noise isolation material around the wheels... Nice!

Last week I hit the 20000 km on my odometer in 5 months time. I enjoyed every time I drove it, and did not have any problem yet. It still feels like a new car.

Mine is mostly covered, up to approximately the back of the rear doors. The diff and axles are exposed, that's all.

Mine is pretty much the same (pre-LCI) except for the transmission cooling opening. I wonder why it doesn't have it, seems like a good idea to cool the transmission Underneath the E60-img_1926__custom_.jpg

It's probably the new 'Efficient Driving' model, to reach lower CO2 levels and better Euro tax levels. I have to check under mine too.

Westcoast, I'd be worried since it says 'Crafted in China'. You'd better check with your dealer as yours might be a fake :-)
