Recently a tyre puncture warning light has poped up on my idrive, i havent got time to sort it out yet but does anyone knows how they detect a tyre puncture??
How they work? Have they got sensors on each suspension so they can detect the tyre pressure on each wheel?

My mate had a mini cooper and the puncture warning light pop up as well and then he found out a tiny nail on the rear wheel and i was like wow...how they detected a puncture?!

I just put a set of new 172 wheels and 4 x Dulop tyres on(Non RF) about a month ago,so hopefully i don't need a new tyre!!!!
Any advise will be appreciated!

Keith

Depending on the year of your car, the puncture warning may or may not have sensors embedded in the wheels. If your valve stems are metal, then you have the sensors. If they are rubber, then you have the system that uses the rotational sensors of the ABS/DSC system.

IF you want, do some searching here using "FTM" (for flat tire monitor) and "TPM" or "TPMS" (for tire pressure monitor system) and you'll learn a bit more...

Thx Rudy, and i found your post regarding the FTM as saying below:

No sensors. No worry. The system uses the rotational sensors from the ABS system so any wheel will work.

The key thing to remember is that anytime you change wheels, tires, or pressure, make sure all four tires are set to the pressure you want and then re-initialize the system so it learns the new setup...
My sister had took the car to the local garage this afternoon to see any punctures on the tyres and the technician said "Probably they changed the tyre cable when they put the new wheels on" (My sister know NOTHING about cars,so i have no idea what "Tyre cable" means i apologise for that!) He may means the valve stem in this case (Am not sure tho)

So, how can i get rid of the tyre puncture warning light by "Re-intialize the system"?? Is it achieved by re-setting the tyre pressure on the iDrive?

If not, what can i do before i take it back to BMW?

BTW....my car is 2003 Nov 530i but am not sure which valve stem i have (probably metal), but here enclosed a pic of the wheels so can anyone spot that?

But thanks again Rudy!

Regards
Keith

The puncture warning tends to come with non RF tires.

The resetting is done with the iDrive.

Please read the manual or just figure it out!
Ain't that hard.

PS. keith84_uk,
Your cars MY would help a lot - the helpers.

Based on the date of your car, you probably don't have the metal valve stems (I'm talking about the stems, not the caps) which means you have the FTM system.

All you need to do if verify that all four tires are at the proper pressure and then reset the system using iDrive. You have to begin the reset procedure while stopped but the procedure won't finish until after you drive a bit...
