Tyre pressure monitor

Half way to work this morning I got a Tyre Puncture warning.
I was in heavy traffic going slowly, so did not feel anything.
Luckily I was 50m from a service station.
Checked left front tyre first and the pressure was 1.9bar instead of 2.2bar.
I had a nail in the tread.
Got the tyre pumped back to the correct pressure and drove to a nearby tyre specialist.
Got it plugged from the inside and all is well again.
Thank you tyre pressure monitor.
So it is interesting to note that it was a pressure difference of 13.6% which triggered the tyre pressure warning.

But last winter with my old 525iA and with my non RF winter tires
I had a Tyre Puncture warning every week for no reason.
Espesially driving on snowy roads.
Let's see what will happen this winter (I still have the same tires).
By the way, I checked my summer tire pressure this week
(first time since I got my new 525iA in July
)and to my surprise I had about 0,8 too low pressures in all tires.
No warnings have occured???

I think the system measures wheel speeds relative to eachother. Hence if all are deflated equally you will not get a warning.

Correct--FTM measures rotational speed of each tire relative to the other tires. Normally, if you have a flat, one tire will deflate much faster than the others, and its rotational speed will differ from the others, so it will cause an alert. If you don't check your tire pressure for a while and all 4 tires deflate consistently, FTM will not help. It is not a tire pressure monitor system.

Ya its about 6-7 pounds per square inch for us American guys that are wondering... thats how much it takes for the FTM to detect a "flat"

Correct - I should not have referred to it as such.
It indirectly detects pressure loss by measuring a higher wheel speed at the wheel which has the puncture.
My wife's Renault has the pressure sensors on each wheel. But I wonder if this just introduces more risk (when getting tyres changed/replaced), or potential points of failure.
Does the BMW system not use info from the existing ABS system/sensors?
