I need to change all 4 run-flat tyres due to excessive wear of the Dunlop factory fitted SP01 DSST's. My UK dealer claims the wear (on the inside and outside edge), high road noise, and the fact that the rubber is cracking after 12 months is normal and therfore unlikly that I will be able to progress a warranty claim. I have done 19,000 miles. They also claim that it is unlikely that the wheels are out of alignment.

I have the choice of the following:-

Dunlop SP01 DSST at ?180.79 inc VAT each fitted (from www.valuetyres.co.uk)
Goodyear NCT5 ECT at ?166.90 inc VAT each fitted (from www.etyres.co.uk)
Bridgestone RE050 at ?182.11 inc VAT each fitted (from www.valuetyres.co.uk)

My dealer says he will try and match prices I can obtain from elsewhere.

What tyre would you recommend from the above? I am reluctant to try Dunlop SPO1 DSSTs again due to high noise, poor performance, and excessive/uneven wear.

Thanks

whihr,

Did you by any chance mention to your dealer that tyres were being replaced under warranty in the US and one case in Singapore??? As there maybe a possibility of a design fault in the Dunlop tyres made in 2003/2004.

I'm keeping a close eye on my tyres but it sounds like UK drivers are not getting similar treatment compared to other countries when it comes to replacing tyres.

I may check with my dealer later this week.

From prior experience, Bridgestones have bags of grip, but too soft compund, so will not be very long lasting.

I agree - I dont think we are getting the same treatment. When I mentioned to my dealer that I understood there was a design fault they denied all knowledge.

I have loads of tread left in th emiddle of the tyre (probably 4-5mm before the wear indicators are reached) but the inside and the outside edge of the tyres are completly bald. The rubber is also badly cracked. My dealer claims this is normal! My tyre pressures are all OK. (see photos attached)

I have done nearly 20k miles. On my E39 (525D) my tyres lasted around 30k miles with similar driving style.

My dealer did say that if I changed the tyres via them that they would send my original back to BMW/Dunlop and see if they would offer a contribution towards replacement.

I am convinced there is a design fault. My tyres are noisey, cracked and wering quickly - this cannot be normal!

whihr,
I'm approaching 11k miles, so haven't done as much miles as yourself yet and the tread is looking fine at the moment. Like I said I'm keeping an eye on them just in case. Not sure if I'm getting paranoid but think I'm starting to hear and feel my tyres are getting noisy now. I'll check with my dealer on Wednesday when my E60 is in for the Oil Service.

If I remember correctly Olivin530 (in Singapore) said his tyres were fine around 10-11k but then started to getting worse from then which is why I'm keeping close watch on them.

I think the best way to sort them out is to get some technical bulletin from the US guys but it sounds as if its a case by case replacement and not a general replacement.

Very very annoying for us UK owners. Keep us updated on whether you do get any contribution etc from BMW if you go with them of course.

Cheers

I find it almost impossible to believe that they are trying to convince you that it is normal to have that much cracking in the rubber after only one year. That is alarming. I'd document as much as possible and initiate a warranty claim.

I replaced my Dunlop runflats after only 11,000 miles 'cos they were worn out. I fitted Michelin Pilot Primacy and these have done 10,000 miles without too much wear with the same style of driving. Again, the dealer would not accept any liability for the short life of the Dunlops.

I am taking a risk, because I do not pack a space saver spare, so next time I might check out the new generation of runflats to see if there are any improvements.
