Two bad high pressure fuel pumps in 8 months?? What are the chances??

Hi All,

My '09 535i (09/08 build) started having long crank times (6-8 secs) at 4 months of age (3500 miles) -- the dealer said it was the high pressure fuel pump and replaced it. Five months later, the problem recurred and I'm just back from the dealer, where they installed a second high pressure fuel pump. (Now at 8k miles) According to my SA they made quite a project of this, and the foreman was involved. They said that they could detect low fuel pressures between the pump and the engine and that they were comfortable that the problem is isolated to two bad pumps. According to them, this would have been a $1500 repair job -- each time!

I searched through the many other applicable posts to this, and haven't come across anyone who had this problem twice, so I thought I would start a new post. Also, someone mentioned they thought there was a TSB on this involving a software update, and I couldn't come across that -- could anyone speak to that also?

I had this problem twice on my 08 535 within a couple thousand miles between each other. However, BMW said they re-engineered the pumps and after I got the new part it has not had any problems.

You two are scaring me. Had a car for a while now, no problem yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Pretty normal unfortunatley. My buddy's 535i went through 3 pumps in one year. And chick with a 335i also got hers replaced. Don't worry about it guys, BMW covers it for the next 10 years

My wife is now on her 4th('08 535). The last 3 are/were the "updated/superceded" high pressure pump, and the last two were within the last two weeks. Unfortunately for me, I've been the sucker getting stranded by the POS when it takes it's crap(3 of the 4 times) and goes into limp mode. Funny thing about it is, I rarely drive the thing, and when I do, it's only because I'm running an errand and she wants me to put gas in it.
I'm now gonna attempt to lemon-law it.

Yes the HP fuel pump is the achilles heel of the TT engine in the 535. Sorry to hear of your troubles but not surprised.

No reason to lemon law it... It's just one fault that is almost considered "normal"

I've had 4 in 9 months , 2 in 3weeks.
Had the fuel delivery system yanked and totally replaced car drives like a dream now other the the turbo lag, which I will get the updates for that in the next month or two.

My last HPFP failure ( knock on wood ) was in Jan.
the last three pumps have been the Gen IV's or the most current pumps, and I've had a laundry list of other parts replaced.

I was thinking of Joining the E90 crowd in the flavor of a M3 Sedan next spring, but if no other failures come up between now and Dec. I'll end up keeping the car, if the HPFP fails once more I'm in buy back territory or in ALA Lemon law route.

Sorry if this has been answered but... would this apply to folks who are out of their factory warranty period? And just how might someone go about ensuring that this is the case with their local BMW dealership?
