Default Transmition toast??

I have a 2004 530i with 120k on it. I was on my way to a buddy's lake house which was about 80 miles out. About 40 miles out after cruising about 80mph the whole way I get offrom the highway and stop at a red light. I try to go and boom nothing. No response from the transmition. RPMs go up but car won't move. I restart the car unplug the battery still nothing. Tried to push the car a little and drop it in drive thinking something just got stuck and still nothing.

After restarting the car when I put it in drive the trans jumps. Weirdly enough the car tries to drive in Neutral!!

What could be the issue??

Start by checking fluid level...if it's low auto trans can malfunction. ...

Have it towed to a mechanic, BMW indy or BMW

check the DIY section of this forum. First thing you need to check is that your fluid level and condition are good, and that you have no leaks. You also need to have EGS read for fault codes.

Default Get to a mechanic and hook it up

A similar problem happened to me, but I was just pulling out of my neighborhood. I have an '08 550i with 114,000 miles and the Sport Auto trans. I was receiving a transmission error and dreading the expected cost. Had it towed to my mechanic. Turns out it was coil #3 had blown just as I accelerated. Replaced the coil, reprogrammed the car, and it's running great again. Hope you get as lucky!

Default Update

Ok I took it to the mechanic and he told my my oil pump was not working and I blew it. He quoted me $2400 out the door to rebuild it. Does that sound like a good price? Also I could buy a used transmition somewhere and get it installed for $450 plus $150 for oil. In that case any recommendations on where I could get one?

If you are in the $2400 range, I'd look at prices of factory rebuilt transmissions.

Are you referring to the transmission oil pump or the engine oil pump?

I am not aware of any used ZF 6-speed automatic transmissions that cost $450. From where did you get that pricing?

I assume that is a junkyard sourced transmission.
