Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I'm curious NCSUgrad if you were getting any error codes along with the shifting problems before you replaced the solenoids?

Yes. I can't remember the exact code, but basically it was some kind of ratio error that meant something was slipping. I had these especially during kick downs from 5 to 4; merging on the interstate was the worst and would almost always end in a transmission malfunction message on the idrive and end in me having to pull over...

Since doing the solenoids I have not had a single transmission code and it shifts better than it ever did before. It's not the 100% fix for everyone, but it has fixed a lot of problems for a lot of people over on bimmerfest

Awesome, thanks for the response. It looks like I'll be next to tackle this one. What's strange is that I have yet to get any failsafe modes engaged when I drive the car (knock on wood) My wife gets it almost every time, and from the way she describes it, it sounds like it's during the 5-4 downshift.

I've cleared fault 4F85 multiple times now, which is ratio monitoring for the E-clutch. I know that the shaft portion of the E-clutch is a mechanical weak point in this transmission, but I still think my problem has to do with the valve body.

At this point I'm debating whether or not I should do just the solenoids or throw a whole new Mechatronic in there. Obviously there's a signficant price differential, so we'll see.

Assuming you did the proper ZF tranny fluid change, what you need to have done now is clear out the transmission adaptive memory (not the "25 sec hold down"). Go to any reputable euro indy shop and have them clear it out for you. A shop in my town charged me $20.

I recently had to change out my fluid because my pan drain plugged was leaking. Immediately after the change I started to get some very very hard shifting from 2 to 3 and 3 to 2, regardless whether I was in Drive, DS, or M modes. It always happened. So I had the shop clear the transmission adaptive memory and all is AWESOME! No slam and no delay when putting into reverse. Hope this helps Good luck

inpa does this in just a few seconds, I rebuilt my mechanics unit and mine it's right in the menu.. its easy as starting your car
