Transmission&Will not start
Hi new here, I have a 2005 545i the other week I went to start my car and Up came all these errors "gear can be engaged without depressing the brake" DTC, ABS. Now it will not start either no crank no noise no nothing took it to my mechanic he found nothing recently put new solenoids in and fluid about 5 months ago because it was stuck in third gear got that fixed now this HELP!!!!!!!!!?????????

It seems like its your cable to the valve body is partially disconnected. You should drain your fluid a establish a good connection.
Looking at the whole post it could be more than that. Have you checked your battery? Do a battery check if it is good then check to see if you have a good connection to your VB. The mech sleeve could be not in all the way causing your cable not to be 100% connected. If your mechanic did the solenoid job then have him check his work. Hope this was helpful. |
i'm no expert but couldn't this be because of a faulty brake switch?

DanielFD- Yes the brake switch could cause the first issue also the shift lever being gummed up. I am going with the obvious since he just had the solenoids done. I have not seen a brake switch going out in these cars.
OP- the VB is the valve body which holds the solenoids. So he did the VB repair after you got the error message or before? Also how many miles do you have? If you check the cable and it is good then the next thing to check is the shifter connection to see if it needs cleaning. When things are spilled it finds its way down under the console. Has the car been hooked up to see what the error messages are saying. You might have multiple issues going on. |

It would not be the starter if you are getting that message and not likely at 83k. You would hear the starter engage that I believe is the only way to check other than a voltmeter. You will not hear it engage because the car has immobilized itself due to an electrical issue. The shift lever is beside the shifter. You have to take the center console out to see it. It's the only cable to the shifter. It will have three pins I believe. Have you spilled something recently. It will take about 20 to take the center out if you've never done it. Coin tray, idrive knob, center wood grain and shifter knob (only in neutral with it come off) will have to come off. You should have enough room to see the connection running along the passenger side of the shifter.
