I have a 535xi the transmission has a surging/jerking or quickly shifting issue when driving in town at lower speeds.
The local shop originally said it was possibly a torque converter lock up issue called today and said they could not fix it because the issue was in the shiftier and they did not have the tools to program it.

It drives fine for the most part if driven in manual but when in is when it automatic the most problems. It is my wife's car and she does not like driving in manual.

Anyone know of any places in East Tennessee that will not charge me an arm and leg to fix it?

I don't know if it the shifter. I would take it to an Indy to have it looked at. The seems to me an issue most of us have had (/w variations) and it's covered extensively in the DIY section.

Have a look at it and read the whole thread. There is a lot of good information out there. Most start with changing the fluid (ZF trans fluid) to start the process some dive in like I did and fix everything so they only have to do it once. It's relatively cheap if you have the knowledge of turning a wrench and read instructions, if not you can speak confidently to a mechanic about the issue and not be in the dark.

Either way get a second opinion from a shop that works on BMW and not the dealership. They'll tell you you need a new transmission. Lol
