I have exactly same kind of worries here with my 530DAT. Revs jump up and down. And then it goes away and comes back in few days.
I think I print this whole discussion thread and get it to dealer and get it fixed. I have privately bought warranty, 1.5 yrs left luckily... cost me 1200? for 2 years/40000km, but it has been worth it, self leveling pump changed, 1000?, 6 x glow units, all thermostats done and so on ..
I also have some kind of clonking noise and shudder which runs at around 1/6 frequency of revs, maybe the turbine is also having a bad day.. (or vibration damper..) and turbo whistles a lot , when sunroof is open it sounds like jet engine.. and this only at 70000km?s driven.

It's been a couple of weeks, and the torque converter engage/disengage problem is solved. It has not occured even once. This is the good news...
The not-so-good news is that the "jerking" when trying to make a smoooooth stop is NOT solved and neither is the "slam" solved. I get the sense that these two problems are inherent in the design of the transmission, and more pronounced in e60s with higher torque engines. This site seems to sum it all up pretty well: http://www.thelurch.com/lurching_zf_transmission.htm
I've learned to stop smoothly by moderating the brakes; I give myself a bit of extra space in front of me to slow the car down, such that when the RPMs drop from 750 to 500, I can ease up on the brakes to bring her to a smooth stop. The "slam" can be moderated by not accelorating hard from a rolling stop. Like the brake pedal, I moderate the accelorater to avoid the "slam".
Hope this helps,
Randy...
