Hi,

It's been a while since I've posted, all has been rosy in the world of my 04 530i auto (94k miles), until...
  • transmission fault happened
  • dealer changed gearbox oil
  • now I get transmission faults every journey

Dealer says it is wear and tear and it will require a new gearbox, quote £4,700!

What I'd like to know is...
  1. Do I really require a new gearbox?
  2. Can I get one cheaper elsewhere, some searching shows the part no. as 24007527711 (GA6HP19Z)?
  3. What do I need to search for when looking for the RIGHT gearbox?
  4. Can I use a used/reconditioned gearbox?
Desperately love my car so don't want to hand it over as scrap!!

Thanks Guys, really appreciate your thoughts!

Matt

Dealer is responsible for new transmission if this has happened within a short mileage and/or within like 1 or 2 months since they did the service. THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT OR THE CAR'S BUT THE DEALERSHIP.

DO NOT PAY FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION!!!!!

You need to seriously fight this. Call BMW.

Oh Man, surely not a new 'box after only 94k, my 325 auto did 196k withut any hint of a new box.

What is your driving style, you must be really hammering it to need a change!!

Good luck with finding an alternative - keep us informed as I have 91k on mine and the thought of a gearbox chnage makes my wallet squeak...

Thanks Guys. What is the standard warranty on a 2004 E60? would i be covered?

And no, I don't hammer the car. Obviously there are times when i have to put my foot down to get round something but these times are rare and a 3.0L BMW should be able to handle it. At least I thought not.

You will be out of standard warranty, have bought bought an extended warranty from BMW? Or someone else?

If not, but you have had the car serviced at BMW dealerships I would take it to them and ask for a significant contribution - with usage based service intervals and with them having done the services it should not have failed.

Your 'box should have been able to handle it...

If you want to look for a used replacement you could try this and see what is offerred:

Good luck, keep us updated.

his car had transmission faults before the fluid change. why should the dealer be responsible if the fluid change didnt fix the problem?

If you contact ZF who make the 'box, they will let you know who can work with these boxes in the UK. Many standard specialists will not touch the ZF 6 speed boxes. Start here : http://www.zf-group.co.uk/car_service.htm

You should be able to get a full recon on your current box for c. £1,500. It sounds to me like the dealer flushed the 'box which can unseat debris and shunt it into other areas where it causes more problems.

Good luck - no need to spend £4k plus !

Guys, THANKS, I'm finding your responses very helpful - all i've got at the moment are waking dreams about losing my e60 and/or remortgaging the house to keep it!!

I shall be on the blower to try to find a reconditioned box and even more difficult - find a reputable mech to fit it!!

I'll let you know...still gonna write that letter to BMW on the off chance too, as i wouldn't have thought the box should go after 94 k (of 60% motorway commuting).

Cheers,

Matt

p.s. juliann - you are exactly right, the dealer did flush the box, twice, and that is why i'm getting more faults...apparently.

I'm searching for recon units by part number, 24007527711 (GA6HP19Z), is there any way I can easily find out which E60s (or other BMW models) have this gearbox?

One other thing...the dealer says the faults are due to wear and tear, is it possible to recondition MY gearbox or do I need a different new/recon unit that doesn't have wear and tear?

Hi Again!

Things have started looking up (and I don't just mean the blue sky and sunshine)...

I contacted JPAT from the website given above (thanks for the link), who has recommended Newbury Transmissions for the recon work. I've heard more rumours about ZF boxes being a pain in the *$&! but JPAT say that if you have a tranny specialist then they don't pose a problem. Does anyone have any experience of Newbury Transmissions?

I also had a call from Engear, who quoted £1400+VAT for supply and fit of a recon unit - I have since heard from mechanic friends of my Dad's that they may be quoting for a non-ZF box hence why it is so cheap. Anyone got any comments on Engear?

I think I'll post a separate post about these two companies.

Thanks again,

Matt
