Never driven an SMG, but got a question (s)
Can you stall it?
Do you have to go up and down through the gears or does it automatically downshift whenyou slow?
Is the "auto" a setting or just not shifting with the paddle and it shifts when it wants to?

As to your questions.
1. No, you cannot stall it (some have stalled with an SMG transmission, but this is more computer glitch than inability to shift properly)
2. It will automatically downshift for you -- it'll even rev-match if you blip the throttle. Of course, if you want to, you can downshift yourself.
3. Auto shifts automatically for you at predetermined rpms.
Hi all!
This is my first post, but I've been lurking for a few months. The reason for that is due to transmission choices. I want a mid-size, rear-drive, manual transmission car. The 3, Audi A4 and Merc C-class are all a bit too small in the back seats (and the C350 gets crazy expensive with options). The Caddy CTS is on the lower end of acceptable size wise, but is too chunky looking for my taste. The Infiniti G35 might be OK, but I haven't looked at one since they were first introduced, and my memory of it is fuzzy. Which leaves me with the 5er. If I make it seem like it's the 5 by default, it's not. It's been the front runner since I decided my next car would be a manual. The only problem is that I have too many choices; 550, 530 or maybe even a 530xi wagon?

I'll drive a manual transmission for as long as BMW will let me. There is NO other choice.

I've always appreciated BMWs for their balance of luxury, sport and safety. The SMG just made things that much better!

BMW don't offer manual transmissions on the E60 in Australia. In fact, in terms of sedans, the 325i is the highest spec available with a manual transmission.

welcome
does the infiniyi have a manual trans option?
I went through the same thought process, but try to get a cts with a manual - the dealer I talked to could not find one, and it was only available on the smaller engine at the time - not sure if still that way
It seems GM still considers a manual trans an economic choice and not a desired choice
Auto...but that is because smg wasn't possible. Coming from only manual transmissions i got tired of shifting especially in city drive when sometimes i get to drive 200m in 30minutes. I think even though the m5 will be offered a manual i would still go for the smg. Smg is the perfect blend between an auto and the sportiness of a manual. Of course it won't give u the exact feel as in a manual but hell i'm willing to sacrifice that all day long for the automatic gearchange.

I was looking for a sporty 4-door midsize car (w/ decent back seat leg room) with manual also.
Audi S4 - great car, but a little too small
Infiniti G35 - good value, but I didn't like the interior (layout and quality)
Acura TL - great car and value ... except that 6-speed and front wheel drive don't work so well
Lexus IS250 - kind of small and underpowered, but if the IS350 came in manual, I would've considered it
I ended up with a CPO '04 545i 6-speed.
On a side note, the steering and clutch on the E36 M3 were perfect. I'm still trying to get use to the AS and clutch of the 545i
