transmission

i have a 2005 530i E60. about 12 monthe ago the transmission warning light came on. i stopped the car and restarted it and it went back to normal. it has happe ned a few times since and always been ok when restarted.
it happened again last week and now the car is stuck in third gear and the warning light remains on.
I have had it scanned for error codes and nothing shows up.
any thoughts.?

I'm not sure.
took it to a local BMW expert, who seemed to know what he was doing.

What does your "expert" say the problem is?

He is unsure because of no error code.
he said he would start be replacing the transmission oil and filter.

it sounds like you might need to find a new expert. if the car threw a code, it would be stored. you need to find someone with true BMW diagnostic software and not one of those generic OBDII code readers.

unlikely, but you need to scan EGS with BMW specific software, a generic OBD2 scanner may not give you the information you need. EGS is the acronym for the transmission control unit.

it is possible to have problems with no code, but you said yourself that that a warning light came on. even if the error light went away, the trouble code would be stored and could be read with diagnostic software that can access all of the individual modules.
