Hello Guys,
I know this is not E60 related but for those of us in the US who grumble about having to press the clutch its a small price to pay for safety. I am travelling through Western Canada this week and a tragedy happened close by at a ferry loading bay. A manual trans car (not BMW) was parked close to the edge of the water with a child in the front seat and they operated the ignition with the car in gear, the car lurched and skidded into the dark freezing water. The frantic father , standing close by jumped in and sadly could not resue his only child
So the moral of the story please never leave keys in the ignition or allow children to play in a car (they have been known to spontaneously combust) !
Everytime I press the clutch to start my new car (2008 ED 550 6-speed) I will think of that tragedy yesterday. The small town is still in shock at what happended.
Safe driving and enjoy your cars (and hey when you get that paint chip or small scratch remember the important things in life, our wonderful cars are just metal boxes at the end of the day...really nice metal boxes that is )

What a tragic story.
On another note, are you Roland from toadfly who had an issue with an EuroDel back in 2001 and the sump oil mishap?

Hm... There is no such limitation on our manual 520i. But then again, I don't live in the US.
Use the handbrake.

In here in driving school they teach in first driving lesson how to start a vehicle and that includes always pressing clucth. To me it's so automatic action that I don't even notice when I do that. That with manual of course. Many automatics you have to press brake before starting.
And no, I never leave keys in when I step out of car. Not even when I fill up!
