I have a loaner 2007 530xi at the moment and it has Nav with traffic information and it's really nice!!! I was wondering if anyone knows if it could be retrofitted at all to an older NAV unit or is it a part of the NAV itself? Thanks!

In theory, yes, but BMW is not offering a retrofit (they were thinking about it and decided last summer it was too complex).
In addition to the tuner for the TI, you might need a newer CCC (this depends on your car's vintage) and definitely a Progman upgrade. A few other things might be needed which aren't coming to mind at the moment.

Hi Jon, Here's a question for you in this same vein. My 07 530xiT is a 09/06 build and was supposed to have Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI). When the vehicle was ordered my dealer's GM was not able to order the vehicle with NAV and without HD radio (I was sitting next to him when he attempted to do so several times to no avail). There was an admitted issue in the BMW DCS order system at the time I ordered my car (08/06). So needless to say my car was produced with HD radio and without RTTI because at that time they were mutually exclusive. From 03/07 production to current you can now have both RTTI and HD. My HD tuner is having some issues now and they are going to replace it with the newer style tuner that receives HD multicast, so the big question is, in the newer production 5's is there 1 tuner for both HD radio and RTTI or is there 2. If there is only 1 tuner would it be possible, through a vehicle recode, to activate RTTI at that point and still have HD? If there are 2 it's a non issue at that point. Thanks!!

Bill - We've PMd about this subject before. Seems that there's another issue regarding the licensing of the RTTI system. As you know, the post 08/2006 build E60s w/NAV had RTTI installed, but the cost was (I think) $100 more for the NAV. Some part of that $100 was the license for the system. Not only would you have to work through the hardware, firmware, and software issues, but also the legal issues regarding the licensing.
I completely understand waht you are saying. I think I am just going to let them install the new HD tuner, be happy with my new multicast capability and forget about traffic, until it is time to order my new car. Thanks!!
