Tracking a 535i
 

I realize that this is my first post here, but I'm far from new in the online BMW world.

I was wondering if anyone here has tracked or regularly tracks their E60/E61 535i. I was hoping to get some feedback on how the car does. I have a 2010 535 M sport wagon that is in great shape and mostly stock (lowering springs, and SAT are the only mods)
I realize that most people track M cars or 3 series, but I'm different. 20 years ago I ran my E34 535i in the 2000, 2001, and 2002 One Lap of America races. I still have that car and my plan was to run is again on my 20th anniversary next spring. But there's a long list of stuff that needs to be done to a 30 year old 500+hp modified car in order to survive 5000 miles in a week. Not the least of which, is that my driving skills are quite rusty since I haven't been to a track in 8 years. So I was thinking of using my wagon instead of my E34.
I was thinking that the upgrades would be minimal. Stage 1 flash, intercooler, downpipes, intake, M5 brakes and maybe M5 seats and fenders.
Any thoughts?

That's an aggressive E34! I can't offer any answers other than the e60 is a pig, so if you're doing autocross it'll be heavy heavy. I just finished the BMW ultimate drive event, and the 330i rwd did well, but that alone was a teeny bit heavy. My e60 AWD feels much heavier. I think it would do best on a road course vs a tight auto-x. Bring what you have.. some people will take the most beat up car! Just have fun :)

E60 AWD is heavy, but RWD is not too bad, I think around 3650lbs. Your AWD Wagon is super heavy though, around 4100lbs, so not sure how well it would track.

The E34 is a pig at autocrossing too. It's not what the car was built to do. When I started building my E34 20 years ago, I was told the same thing about it's weight and size. Now it measures up to a 2 series. On the right tracks it shines.
I'm not looking to race it. I'm looking to drive it fast and aggressively on a track. The weight concerns me for tire wear and brake fade. Any experience with that?
I'm probably one of the few people not running a tune on an N54, so I was wondering if the stock brakes would hold up. I'm considering getting a set of M5 brakes to be combined with track pads. Maybe also pick up M5 sways, front seats and fenders to fit a set of square 265 tires on it.
I just want to be able to put it thru it's paces on a track for 20 minutes. Then possibly use it in a One Lap, but there it only needs to do 4 laps.
As for AWD on a track. I had a big turbo B5 A4 that was a lot of fun on the track. Unstoppable in the rain. Despite having stock power and AWD, I've been able to get my wagon to step out under acceleration and it feels like a RWD open diff car then.
I'm not looking to win the One Lap out right, just place well in the luxury car class which is usually populated with M3s, M5s, E63s, Panameras, RS7s, etc. I want something that's comfortable to drive 10 hours at a time and being able to stretch out in the back and sleep doesn't sound that bad either and is a decent trade off.
For those who have never heard of the One Lap of America race, its a 8 day, 7 night event. Each day you do a time trail, drag race, or autocross at a different track somewhere in the country. Each night you drive your car to the next event. No trailers. No support crew. Run what you brung "street" cars. It's an endurance event. Top 10 is usually filled with either pro or amateur full time racers, running very expensive, very modified fast cars. The rest of the field is there for the fun. That's what I'm looking to do.
I did the race in 2000 at the age of 23 in a 10 year old 535 with a good suspension and brake setup. The car wasn't fast but made it thru the whole week without an issue. The 2001, 2002 and 2011 races, the car was heavily modified and had lots of issues. It doesn't matter how fast you are at 1 event, if you miss 40% of the events your at the back of the pack.
I'd like to do it next year with a 30 year old 535, but if not, a 10 year old 535 is quite fitting. And the E61 may be heavy, but she can be hussled and nearly as fast if not faster than my E34 was in any of the previous races, in her current configuration.
