Your car is 2006, so I don't think sensor is needed
I think they started using sensors on or about 3/2006 production...

i have a july 2004 with a ftm, so if i put a new set of rims without the ftm sensors would that be a problem besides the warning messegs? thanks.

No, because as it was said many many times here, the sensors were changed in the spring of 2006. Your car does not have sensors in the wheel.

Thats exactly why I still have my summer tires on. I am afraid to change to my winter tires (which was not an issue so far on the east coast with the heat wave we had...).
How hard is it to change a valve stem?

Just think of the TPM sensors as metal valve stems that cost $30-$35 more than normal ones. Putting on winter shoes isn't that hard and shouldn't be an issue just because your car now uses TPM sensors as long as your tire shop has a clue. TPM sensors will soon be the norm.

Simple - in principle. I just see scratched wheels, destroyed RTFs etc............the tire shop having a clue is exactly the issue.
I have non BMW wheels so the dealer doesn't want to touch them. A friend of mine used a local Tire Rack recommended installer and they scratched 2 of his wheels (of course it was not their fault...).

I do have this TPM menu on my idrive. That means that I need to move the sensor from my old wheels to the new ones right?

Check your wheels... if you have metal valve stems and a silver valve stem cap with a little o-ring inside then you have them. My guess is that you don't have the TPM sensors but have the TPM that depends on your ABS speed sensor. The older system will only tell you that a tire is low and won't tell what tire specifically needs air.

Hmm, yeah.. Then mine doesn't have any sensor. Mine only warns that a tire is low, but not specifically which.

I'm pretty sure the metal cap with the o-ring is used on all BMW's (and has been for many years) so don't look only at that. The metal stem is something that I think will differentiate between wheels with sensors and wheels without. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...)
